International Journal for Numerical Methods in Biomedical Engineering (IJNMBE) Best Doctoral Thesis in Biomedical Engineering Award
The award consists of a registration fee waiver* and travel grant of $500 (USD), sponsored by the International Journal for Numerical Methods in Biomedical Engineering. The award will be granted at the discretion of a special scientific committee and announced during the conference. A runner-up prize is also awarded.
Eligibility:
You are eligible if you defended your doctoral thesis or obtained your PhD (or other equivalent postgraduate doctorate degree) within the last 2 years of the date of the conference^, and if the subject of your thesis is of substantial current interest, and in accordance with the scope of the conference. The thesis must be written in English. If you are unsure of your eligibility, please contact the organisers before submitting your candidacy.

On the conference registration form, please tick the appropriate box next to the question “Do you wish to submit your candidacy for the CMBE Best PhD Award in Biomedical Engineering?” After registration, the CMBE co-chairs and committee will contact you with a separate form to collect additional information, including a full PDF of your doctoral dissertation (PhD thesis or equivalent) and official evidence of thesis completion (such as proof of award or confirmation of successful defence).
Submissions will be reviewed by the scientific committee, and the winners will be announced during the conference banquet on Tuesday, 22nd June 2027.
*Registration fee waiver is applied as a refund of the standard registration fee minus administrative charges. The refund will be issued to the account associated with the original payment.

Winner and Runner-Up for 2026:
Dr Remi Hernandez said, “The first conference I attended at the beginning of my PhD was the CMBE conference in Milan back in 2022. I genuinely enjoyed the experience and drew a great deal of inspiration from it throughout the rest of my PhD journey. As such, it feels like a true “full circle” moment to receive the best PhD thesis award from the same conference four years later. I am deeply honoured to receive this award, and I would like to thank the CMBE organizers, the International Journal for Numerical Methods in Biomedical Engineering and all the reviewers for this recognition. I would also like to thank my advisors and all the people that supported and pushed me during my PhD. I am very much looking forward to the next edition of the CMBE conference!”
Dr Kaihong Wang said, “I am truly honoured to receive the Runner-up Prize for Best Doctoral Thesis at the 9th CMBE conference. It has been a wonderful opportunity to connect with so many inspiring researchers and to exchange ideas with colleagues from around the world. I would like to sincerely thank the conference organizers and the award committee for this recognition for my PhD work. This award is a great encouragement, and I am highly motivated to continue contributing to computational and mathematical modelling in biomedical engineering and to advancing research that can benefit healthcare.”
Dr Aaron Brown said, “I’m very happy and honored to have received this recognition. I want to thank everyone who supported me throughout this work, especially my advisor, Professor Alison Marsden, for her guidance and mentorship. It was wonderful to attend CMBE and see so much excellent research that connects closely with my thesis, and I’m grateful to be part of such an inspiring community.”
Dr Uxio Hermida said, “I am very happy and honored to receive the Runner-up Prize for the Best Doctoral Thesis Award. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the CMBE organizers and the award committee, as well as to my advisors and colleagues for their invaluable guidance and support throughout my PhD. It was wonderful to attend the conference and see so much exceptional research being done in the field, and I am already looking forward to the next CMBE edition.”
